Flower Guide: Standard vs Garden Roses

July 13, 2020

Roses, the most popular flower in the world. Coming in thousands of hybrids and more than 150 species worldwide, these petaled beauties have stolen our hearts and many others alike.

Cut roses come in so many shades, sizes and colors! Garden roses in Singapore cost significantly more than Standard ones but they have been growing in popularity lately. Some very popular varieties include David Austin Keira, Cafe Latte etc. So what exactly is the difference apart from the price tag?

Shape:

Standard roses have pointed shape petals rotated around one center while Garden roses have ruffled petals swirling around different centers to form a rounded bloom.

Size:

In general Garden roses are larger than Standard ones due to the bloom and petal shape

Scent:

Standard roses do not carry scent and some Garden roses are bred for their scent!

Vase life:

Standard roses tend to have longer vase life (they live longer) than garden roses

As you can see from the photo above, there are differences even between various standard roses or garden roses, with so many different varieties to choose from, roses will definitely remain one of our favourite flowers!
